George Carlin – comedian – could write something so very eloquent.

This is a masterpiece. If you have not read it, take the time to read it now.

GEORGE CARLIN (His wife died a short time ago …..and George followed her, dying July 2008)

George Carlin - comedian
George Carlin - comedian

Isn’t it amazing that George Carlin – comedian of the 70’s and 80’s – could write something so very eloquent…and so very appropriate.
A Message by George Carlin:
The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways , but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.
We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.
We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.
We’ve learned how to make a living, but not a life. We’ve added years to life not life to years. We’ve been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We’ve done larger things, but not better things.
We’ve cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We’ve conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We’ve learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.
These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just leave it.
Remember; spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.
Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.
Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn’t cost a cent.
Remember, to say, ‘I love you’ to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.
Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.
Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.
AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

  1. This was not written by Carlin. As evidenced by anyone who is familiar with his material, Carlin was an outspoken atheist. Carlin would also be annoyed at being associated with these cookie cutter sayings, he often noted the sense of hopefulness in other comedians material that he did not share. He would never have written something as quaint as a “message to the world” and he wouldn’t be caught dead using overused and meaningless quotes like that one on the end.

  2. whoever posted this should be banned from the internets. pretty disrespectful to associate a great comedian (who by the way was still great in the 90s and 00s, and who’s material will remain funny and relevant for the forseeable future) with some amateur attempt to copy his style, but fully disregard his actual thoughts.

  3. Who gives a shit if Carlin wrote it or not you brainless simpletons! The message is what is important. Dear God you people seriously need help if you can’t see that! Aside from attributing it to Carlin, the entire article is spot on. Take your apathy elsewhere!

    • It’s a lame message of meaningless (and inaccurate) platitudes. It’s short sighted, childish, predictable and reads like a tired newspaper editorial. It’s is a myopic glance into a backwards past that never existed.

  4. @meiliken It matters who wrote this because words only have meaning in context. If you read the Snopes article on this you’d know it was written by a rapist. When you know that these moral platitudes are coming from a man accused of 17 rapes, the words suddenly ring a bit hollow don’t they? This piece is brilliant because of it’s “witty” but as Carlin said of it in his response to accusations he wrote it: “it’s weak philosophy.” To think our viewpoints are narrower and our tempers shorter than they were a hundred years ago is just stupid. It feels like it should be true, because we want to believe that the problems of our lifetime are a short aberration. But, our problems have been around for a long time and they will be around for a long time to come.

  5. Wow, so happy to see that everyone called this out immediately. As soon as I got to the “and pray too seldom” line I knew it was fake. To those who say “Who cares? It’s beautiful,” I say it’s only beautiful if it’s genuine. By putting words in the mouth of a dead man, you’re tainting both his memory and his life’s work. Carlin was not only a great comedian, he spoke many truths about the way we live our lives and the problems we face on a fundamental level. For something to be misattributed to him so carelessly is both insulting to the man and indicative of a person that totally missed the point he was trying to make.

    • Really? The man was on his death bed, a. B he was dying of a painful disease. C the cantor of this speach is just like a standup he did in LA 10 years ago, minus the pray thing. So if you believe having added pray to little disinhabits the genuine nature of George Carlin that is as silly as his death of a cat line in his last HBO special. this could have easily been held as a deep secret who knows.

      • The religious are always trying to twist the facts and rewrite history. what is religion but rewritten history. Bronze age mythology with twisted history thrown in for support. Wake up. Its not so bad. Living in reality. I find it to be very nice actually.

  6. It is so much easier to write this message off than to realize that we are living through a period of fraud, non-love, deceit, and materialism over family. Instead of focusing on philosophy and making spiritual and meaningful connections with people, we have delved into a life of greed and selfishness. I do not wish to be negative, but we need to wake up. We should not seek wealth and power and status (read Chaucer’s house of fame). We should find what moves us! We are not on this planet to gorge ourselves and die. We are here to make a difference in the our minds and the minds of all people! When you die, you want people to remember your smile and the love you had for all you knew, not what car you drove, or house you had. That will never matter in the end! Your legacy is what you make it! What do you want yours to be?

  7. Another deathbed conversion score one for the Christians NOT!! I love how Christians do this kind of bullshit with any famous non believer that unfortunately dies during the period of supreme ignorance we are suffering through. Religion, esp. Christians, don’t like it when people pass on without conversion and if you happen to be a lucky one that doesn’t believe in the absurd bullshit “god” you better leave clear instructions in your will or else you’ll get a nice Christian burial as I witnessed families do over and over.
Also, it shows how right George was in all the things that he spoke about throughout his life…

  8. I stumbled this. I don’t know much about Mr. Carlin, but I do know that he spoke many truths. Whether he said this or not, it seems that the actual message is important. It seems to be saying, in the words of another comedian (Gabe Iglesias- and he did say this),
“Why do people measure life by the years instead of how good those years were?”
-Gabe Iglesias, in Hot and Fluffy
You know, you need to do what makes you happy. If money and material goods is the only thing that makes you happy, and you feel fulfilled and completely content with your life upon serious reflection, then good for you. You have found the meaning of life.

  9. George Carlin was an Gnostic, who never failed to hope for MAN’s awaakening…He adhoard organized religions, he saw them as a prision… but he never lost his hope in man’s salvation… that was the message of his comedy… to awaken us, to make us realize what is possible…he always strived for each and everyone of us to reach or true potential…Sleep well my friend…

  10. I believe all that was said until the pray part, George Carlin would never say that, he was always against things like that, having listened to and owned all of his albums and specials, I know this is untrue, He’s the greatest idol I’ve ever had, everything that he has said is true, I am quite upset that people would go to this extent, especially to him, everyone who knows a thing or two about Carlin would know that this is bullshit, immediately.

  11. This is a mixture of a bit by George Carlin and a short speech by His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama. I’ve got them both; one on video and one on a scroll.

  12. Not only did he not write it, it’s INSULTING to condescend his keen intellect by saying
“Isn’t it amazing that George Carlin – comedian of the 70’s and 80’s – could write something so very eloquent…and so very appropriate.”
George Carlin was a genius. Why are YOU so surprised that he might “write something so very eloquent?” All of his material was eloquent. It was just crass. That doesn’t change that he was articulate you ignorant jerk off.
I think George would join us all in saying FUCK YOU very much.

  13. I’m glad somebody posted the snopes link. Anybody who had even the faintest familiarity with Carlin could see this was bullshit. Besides the fact that this sounds nothing like him, it’s all trivial, rhetorical nonsense. There’s always someone saying how worse off we are now, how we used to be so much better. I wonder, when was that? Before the Civil Rights movement? During the Jim Crow years?
If you want to be a better person, be a better person; don’t yammer on nostalgically about a past that never existed.

    • You are right! George Carlin won’t talk such shit. If the person who wrote this article wants people to think its George writing, then he should be trapped into portable toilets and set on fire!:)

  14. It’s already been said, but Carlin was an Atheist, not a Gnostic in any sense of the term. And this article is so far removed from what he actually thought and believed, that it’s kind of sickening to attribute it to him. Although a little boy raping pastor, that kind of makes sense.
Carlin held out no hope for mankind. He viewed us more like a plague set upon the Earth by fate. Any ill that befell us, he thought was well deserved. Or as he once said: “your birth certificate is proof of guilt.”
I think others here are right in claiming that believers can’t stand to let anyone slip away, so they jump on here and make the “See? Even a staunch Atheist recanted on his deathbed.” This was not a deathbed statement by Carlin. It was written long before he died, and also like others here have noted, it’s bullshit. Through and through.

  15. Regardless of the mistaken identity of the author I believe what this text says has some truth to it. Most people who have commented seem extremely biased just as Christians are towards atheists, claiming that everything Christian is bullshit and of no validity. Agreed that many of you don’t pray – neither do I.
Find the correct text that does not end with the cheezy quote and think slightly outside of your atheist boxes – yes, you are in a box, outside of the Christian box, but still in a box. In such a materialist world where Wal-Mart is taking over the market by buying products in the millions and many of them extremely cheap from China and impoverished countries: hence “We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values”.
I have met several wealthy families where the line “fancier houses, but broken homes” does indeed seem true. It would be an error for me to say that this is a general condition of mankind as there are people like me and several others who are conscious of these things and try to avoid them.
Any text is what you make of it. Whatever in this text refers to morality I disregard for it is a Christian morality of Heaven and Hell: a morality that is not my own. If you can not see past your own prejudice and judgment then we all might as well stop reading and keep our mouths shut.

  16.
